Summer sailing school in Cushendall selling fast Last chance to book onto weekly courses in Red Bay Hundreds of wannabe sailors both young and old will be learning to sail in Red Bay over the summer months of July and August. Cushendall Sailing and Boating Club (CSBC) has run a sailing school in Red Bay for nearly 40 years, and bookings for this year are well ahead of schedule.
The Commodore of Cushendall John Lowry believes the decisions by many
families to holiday at home this summer is behind the strong demand for places on the courses. “Our sailing courses are really good value,” he said, “and we now have a network of hundreds of people who have enjoyed learning to sail in Red Bay and are out there recommending our training courses to their friends and families.” “People contact me and say, my friend or my friend's children told me about your courses and they loved it. Can I get booked on?" John added. "Positive feedback and word of mouth recommendations means that we get a high number of returning pupils who bring along their friends. The sailing school has so far received strong bookings across seven weeks of sailing courses during July and August. Several weeks in August are either sold out or almost fully booked, but there are still courses available for juniors and adults to learn to sail. ”Regular visitors to the club come from the surrounding area, Belfast, Dublin, the Western Isles of Scotland and we have returning customers from England. It is great to be so busy this year in particular, as our celebrates its 50th anniversary,” John said. “The successful set-up also gives the young members of the Club an opportunity to become instructors and develop their skills. Many previous students have gone on to become instructors themselves and even have Olympic ambitions,” said John, who was himself a senior dinghy and powerboat instructor at the summer school. "We've invested in new equipment and constantly renew our dinghies to ensure the highest standards for students. We're really looking forward to a busy season and teaching as many people as possible to learn how to sail,” he said. “Everyone felt the recession in 2010 and our numbers weren't as high as previous years, but this year is look particularly strong so far.” The Training Centre, based in Red Bay on the Antrim Coast, is one of the busiest Sailing Schools in the province during the summer months with well over 100 participants each year across the seven week schedule. It is an officially recognised Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Training Centre, Sailing courses for adults and children run from 4th July - 19th August (though the week beginning 8 August is fully booked). A week long course, which involves five full days of tuition on and off the water costs £130. For more information, and to book online, go to www.csbc.co.uk. |
