Following the sail from Bangor to Portpatrick on Saturday September 16th, by 11 members of Ballyholme Yacht Club, over £12,500 was raised in support of the Carrickmannon MRI Unit fund for the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
Since the Carrickmannon charity was set up in 1989, it has helped fund the first MRI scanner in Northern Ireland and continues to help with the buying of a variety of essential items such as scanner upgrades, image guidance systems, breast and spinal coils and anaesthetic equipment.
At the recent Ballyholme Yacht Club dinner dance held at the Clandeboye Lodge, a presentation ceremony took place for the funds raised.
The presentation was made by Bryan Lawther, Commodore of the club and Ross Parker, organiser of the Challenge to Clinton Parker who is one of the Trustees of the charity. Special thanks go to Lorraine Milne of Westfield Health and Roger Armson of Norfolkline Irish Sea Ferries who made significant contributions to the funds raised. Thank you also to the many other people in Northern Ireland, Scotland and England for their very generous support.
Ross Parker commented “I am really proud of every one who contributed to make this challenge such a great success and enable it to make such a significant contribution to the charity”.
A further presentation was made the following day to Beth Montgomery of the Carrickmannon Trust by Ailsa and Molly McLarnon , Fiona and Alex Armson, Niamh and Rose Lennon and Ellen Sterrett who spent a great deal of their summer holidays selling toys to raise money for the charity. Fiona Armson said “We really enjoyed setting up our store in the street. Every one who contributed was very kind, thank you very much”.
